I was away for most of the day yesterday and left the calves and their mama in the barn where they couldn’t get into much trouble, and where not much trouble could find them.  The coyotes have been too active lately, and a couple of small calves would make a nice meal for the pack.

Two weeks after the due date, Rosalie finally gave birth to her first calf. Rosalie’s a grade Jersey and was born here on the farm. She was bred to the same Limosin bull as Lottie. Unlike her mother, Rosalie chose a nice shady spot at the edge of the pasture that’s easily accessible to the

Finally here

Lottie, the 7-year-old Jersey cow, finally had her calf Sunday. He’s half Limousin, sired by the strapping young black bull who lives just down the road. Lottie choose a quiet spot in the trees that could be reached only by traipsing through high weeds and a thorn thicket. I tried to persuade her to bring

Another new baby

This one’s not mine. I spotted this cow and her newborn calf while en route to the feed store. Since I had the road to myself, I parked the truck for a moment and snapped a few photos of the calf taking its first few wobbly steps.

She’s 12 hours old now and content to doze in the dappled sunlight near the barn door. Her mama, a grade Jersey, has a most impressive udder. Woo hoo! Milk for everyone!
